In a letter to parents, Bernadette Burns alerted parents of the incident, which happened on Wednesday, April 17, on Higbie Lane. The driver was described as an older male with a dark complexion, possibly in his 40s or 50s driving a late model green pickup truck.

In response to the reported incident, the Suffolk County Police Department increased patrols in the area and a letter was issued to parents with safety advice:

  • Never leave young children unattended at bus stops. Neighbors should take turns attending to students during the morning pick-up and afternoon drop-offs;
  • Encourage children to walk together to and from school if transportation is unavailable;
  • Remind children to never talk to or be lured by strangers, whether in a vehicle or on foot;
  • Children should be instructed to be cautious of seemingly harmless propositions made by strangers in order to attract their attention;
  • Encourage children to be mindful of their surroundings at all times, especially when they are alone;
  • Observe and make note of any suspicious or unknown vehicles or individuals seen in the community;
  • Inform police immediately if suspicious individuals or vehicles are seen in the community, especially prior to and after school hours;
  • Encourage children to inform trusted adults of any situation or incident that makes them feel uncomfortable;
  • Always think and react in a manner that promotes safety in the school community.
